Linguistically Diverse Education Certificate as a Condition of Employment
Welcome to the Web site for Linguistically Diverse Education Certificate as a Condition of Employment (LDE as COE). This Web site will provide the information necessary for you to meet this condition of employment.
(If you were hired prior to the 2009-2010 school year, please click here for information on how you can participate in the LDE Certificate program.)
APS students come from more than 90 countries and speak more than 100 languages. APS is committed to preparing all teachers and related services staff to better support all students. That is why the commitment was made to provide this opportunity to all new hires.
The LDE Certificate requires successful completion of a three course sequence focusing on linguistics, teaching strategies and assessment for English language learners. APS will pay the tuition, fees and texts for these three courses. If you have already taken one of these courses or a comparable course, you do not have to repeat it. You only take the courses you need to complete the employment condition.
"Interacting with the strategies and others' ideas help me to reflect on my own practices to see how I can make content accessible to all students."

The following is a summary of the LDE as COE requirements and next steps.
What if I am not a classroom teacher?
The COE was put in place for all new licensed employees: teachers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, speech language, etc. While you may not have direct instructional responsibilities, you are making instructional recommendations. You need to have the LDE lens to look through.
What choices do I have?
There will be ten LDE Certificate classes from which you can choose during Fall, Spring , and Summer semesters. The Regis University Master of Arts in Education Program and the University of Colorado at Denver Language, Literacy, & Culture Program are partnering with APS to offer these graduate level classes. The classes are taught by Regis and UCD instructors as well as APS staff who have been trained as university adjunct faculty.
"I can easily see how this will help me in the future with English language learners. Overall, this has been a great learning experience and something that has made me a better teacher, both through the course of this class and well into the future."
-APS teacher/UCD student
When can I register?
Take your time to review the Web site, talk with your family and colleagues, and make choices that work best for you. Registration for the classes will open in May on Avatar, the Professional Learning credit management system. Please visit http://instruction.aurorak12.org/professional-learning/lde/ to view the registration schedules and learn on which day in May you can begin the registration process.
Then, visit http://instruction.aurorak12.org/avatar to learn how to use Avatar and open an account if you do not already have one.
The registration deadline is July 1. Please visit http://instruction.aurorak12.org/professional-learning/lde/ to view the registration schedules.
What do I need to do now?
You have two major decisions to make. Select a university that you prefer – either Regis or UCD. When making this decision consider whether you might want to continue coursework for the endorsement or a master’s degree in ELA or bilingual education. The additional courses needed to complete either program are available at http://instruction.aurorak12.org/professional-learning/lde/. You will take all three courses at the same university.
Select a schedule that works for you. If you register for a Monday class in the fall, you will be able to continue taking classes on Mondays in the spring. If you register for a Tuesday class, you can take a Tuesday class in the spring. Summer classes may not follow this schedule, but the schedule will be published in advance.
"I learned so many sheltering ideas that I never knew before. The different strategies have helped me see how to teach differently."
-APS teacher/Regis student
When are the classes scheduled?
There are ten classes scheduled each semester. Five classes are taught by Regis faculty; five classes are taught by UCD.
How do I apply to the university of my choice and register for the classes?
Below are the steps for applying to your chosen university and registering for classes:
- Please visit http://instruction.aurorak12.org/professional-learning/lde/ to view schedules and learn how to register.
- Register for the class of your choice on Avatar. The address is http://instructiona.aurorak12.org/avatar.
"Understanding learners through the analysis of oral language development, reading and writing behaviors allows me to be a more critical and analytical teacher."

What is my next step?
You are required to attend an orientation session as part of the registration process. Two orientation sessions are scheduled:
At the orientation session you will receive information about the specific university program you have selected, what it means to be a graduate student, and course requirements including passing grades, non-passing grades and incompletes. You will also complete the university registration process and receive your textbooks.
